Congressional US Democrats have called for urgent hearings to dismiss Justice Minister Jeff Sessions. It threatens a constitutional crisis, it said yesterday in a letter to Bob Goodlatte, Republican Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives.

„The actions of the president have brought the country in danger,“ it said. „Due to the forced dismissal of the Minister of Justice, the President now threatens the rule of law.“ Goodlatte’s statement was initially not available. Since the Republicans have the majority in the House of Representatives until the beginning of January, they decide on hearings.

Ongoing Russia investigations go to Whitaker

The letter had been formulated by the Democratic deputy Jerrold Nadler. In the new Congress, he is expected to take over the leadership of the Judiciary Committee of Goodlatte. President Donald Trump had announced on Wednesday – the day after the election – Sessions‘ dismissal.

Now, ongoing investigations into suspected Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election are being passed to incumbent Justice Minister Matthew Whitaker. This has criticized the Russia investigation. Sessions had withdrawn much to the displeasure of Trump from the investigations.
