Thomas Nord is fed up. In the group meeting of the left on Tuesday said the member of parliament from Brandenburg, he could not stand it anymore. Nords message was the meaning: If faction leader Sahra Wagenknecht continue as before, then he will leave the faction. Surprisingly, the little revolt does not come. It is also not sure if it will stay with this revolt.
On the one hand is Wagenknecht, who in the last few years against the party line again and again took refugee critical positions, in September called a left collection movement under the name #Appear beyond the party and a few weeks ago went to distance with 240000 participants extremely successful Berlin # indivisible demo for a cosmopolitan Germany, although the left campaigned for #unteilbar. Wagenknecht saw in it a tendency to a position „open borders for all“ – a demand that they do not share, but in the list of demands of the demonstrators was not to be found.
On the other side are growing sections of the left who come across Wagenknecht. As early as spring, 25 of the 69 members of the group expressed this in a joint statement. In the context of the # indivisible demo, the left-wing foreign expert Stefan Liebich said that Wagenknecht had crossed a border with their refusal; The party and the faction had finally come to #unteilbar. In between, there are regularly smaller surges in front of and behind the scenes, which, however, hardly anyone takes note, because the dispute in the left has long since become chronic and has no news value.
Threat is likely to narrow Wagenknechts scope
The threat of Nord is different. He is not anyone, but was from 2005 to 2012 State Chairman in Brandenburg, sitting since 2009 in the Bundestag, belongs to the Board of the Left and was from 2014 to 2018 their treasurer. In addition, the 61-year-old is married to the Berlin Social Senator Elke Breitenbach. Breitenbach, on the other hand, was the one who forced a debate on Wagenknecht’s statements on migration policy at the last Left Party Congress. More recently, the 49-year-old is still charged that the Greens in the polls pull away, while the left on a ten-percent level, in Bavaria again did not come into the state parliament and in Hesse bad section than predicted.
At least, Norden’s current statement should constrict Wagenknecht’s latitude in both the party and #stand. In the extreme, North could indeed trigger an avalanche, which buries Wagenknecht in its function as chairman among themselves. One of her opponents says: „Another interview on why migration is a bad thing – and then it could have been.“ Although there is no subversion project. Of course, no one can rule out that the scheduled rotation of the 2019 election of the head of the parliamentary group will be preferred.
The patience in the left threatens to tear.
