The Italian government today won a vote of confidence in a controversial security and immigration package by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. The cabinet asserted itself with the vote of confidence in the senate with 163 against 59. Nine senators abstained from the voice. The package still has to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies.

Drastic tightening planned
Some members of the five-star populist movement ruling with the Lega in Rome had tabled dozens of amendments in protest at the planned tightening. The government therefore asked the question of trust in order to speed up the project. The five-star senators announced that they would abstain in the vote so that the coalition would not burst.
The deputy head of the right-wing populist Lega plans a drastic tightening of migration law. According to the will of the government, the granting of humanitarian residence permits should be massively restricted. Also, the distribution and housing of asylum seekers wants to reschedule the government. Most should be future
