President of the Philippines meets Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping met his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte for talks in Manila on Tuesday. They both agreed to build the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, based on mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and cooperation.

In addition, Xi said that both countries have great common interests in the South China Sea, and could continue to control their differences through friendly consultations and promote maritime cooperation to contribute to peace, stability and prosperity for the region’s population.

Duterte responded that his country was in favor of the stability in the South China Sea being shared by the states in that region, and wanted to help develop relations between ASEAN and China.
