According to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, four people were killed and 20 injured in an explosion at a military base in southeastern Turkey. This was announced by the Turkish President today.

The state news agency Anadolu had initially spoken of 25 injured soldiers and seven missing persons. The cause of the explosion was not described in detail.

„Accident“ in ammunition depot

The accident happened in an ammunition depot when heavy weapons were shot, according to the Ministry of Defense. Investigations were initiated. Media were allowed to distribute any photos of the accident site

The Süngü Tepe base is located in Semdinli district in Hakkari province, near the border with Iraqi Kurdistan in the tri-border region with Iran and Iraq. There, the Kurdistan Workers‘ Party PKK, militarily opposed by Turkey, has its headquarters there.
